Miss Saigon is a sung-through musical that follows the storyline of Puccini’s Madame Butterfly and sets it in Vietnam, Thailand, and Atlanta, GA, from 1975 to 1978. With the American evacuation from Saigon imminent, members of the embassy staff avail themselves of the entertainment provided at the Engineer’s Dreamland nightclub. There, Chris meets Kim, a 17-year-old bar girl on her first night of employment. Chris and Kim immediately fall in love and arrange to marry, only to have their romance interrupted by an evacuation that was more abrupt than planned. The rest of the story takes us through Chris’ adjustment after returning to the U.S., Kim’s longing for her soulmate, and the Engineer’s schemes to escape the squalor of southeast Asia for the greener pastures of America. Parental Advisory: Mature subject matter and language.
