Darwin: How One Man’s Theory Turned the World on its Head
February 18-September 3, 2012
Add Review/Comment
Discover Charles Darwin and his revolutionary ideas through this internationally acclaimed exhibit making its first Texas stop at the Witte Museum. Explore the life and discoveries of a man whose insights led to the theory of evolution, forever changing the perception of the origin and nature of our own species and launching modern biological science.
Glimpse into Darwin’s intellectual and personal world through specimens, documents, film, fossils, interactive media, exact replicas of his personal effects and a reconstruction of his study. Touch specimens including a reproduction of a giant Glyptodont skeleton (a prehistoric armored mammal), get up close to samples of petrified wood and use a simple hand lens just as Darwin did in developing and testing his groundbreaking theories. Try out computer interactives to modify a virtual environment and see how the change affects various species, or examine similar features amongst whales, frogs, humans and more!
Experience the wonders Darwin witnessed on his historic five-year voyage as an adventurous young man aboard the HMS Beagle to South America, the Galapagos Islands and beyond. Uncover how Darwin arrived at the startling conclusion that life is not static, but changing, and how his controversial theory of natural selection offered an explanation of Earth’s amazing diversity. These insights continue to guide scientists worldwide as they apply Darwinian concepts to everything from global inventories of life and conservation biology, to the reconstruction of the evolutionary tree of life and the treatment of diseases.
