The Last Reading of Charlotte Cushman by Carolyn Gage

This award-winning, one-woman show by Carolyn Gage recreates the final performance of the 19th Century’s greatest actress, Charlotte Cushman. Martha Prentiss, who first performed this piece in 2005 to critical acclaim, returns as the daring darling of the theater who lived life on her own terms only to succumb to cancer at the age of 57 and to have her fame diminished by time and shifting cultural attitudes. In this final stop on her farewell tour, Cushman recreates her greatest roles and reflects on her life, her loves, and her legacy.

O’Keeffe! by Lucinda McDermott

Unlike the stark, humorless, American icon we have come to know, Georgia O’Keeffe (1887-1986) was human, witty and lively. O’Keeffe! Is as much about the famed American photographer Alfred Stieglitz as it is about Georgia O’Keeffe. The play spans the period of O’Keeffe’s life from 1915, when she began developing her own painting style, to Alfred Stieglitz’s death in 1946. It is the story of a woman emerging from the confines of society, the story of an artist emerging from the confines of tradition, and, finally, it is the story of her struggle to emerge from an intense love relationship intact and individual.
