Article: EntreFlamenco comes back to S.A. stage in fine form

Last weekend, the group not only presented its new high-octane show, “Flamenco del Sur,” it also inaugurated its performance venue and promised to have regular shows every month.
For “Flamenco del Sur,” co-founders Antonio Granjero and Estefania Ramirez brought to town four outstanding artists: guitarists Ricardo Anglada and Luisma Ramos and singers Roberto Lorente and Felix de Lola. From the moment Lorente opened his mouth to sing and the guitars joined in softly, we knew we were in for a treat: music and dance that stirred the senses and the heart.
The show had no thematic through-line except to demonstrate the most representative types of flamenco song and dance, such as siguirillas, tientos or fandangos.
Ramirez and Granjero dazzled with their solos. Both are masters of tension and release that dominate much of flamenco dancing.
In her solea, Ramirez made a solemn entrance, lifted her arms just so and unleashed her first flurry of zapateado. Then she stepped into a dialogue with the music, alternating sections of fast footwork with slower moments that let her body, arms and wrists express her inner turmoil in an ever-changing pattern of intensity.
As impressive as that was, it was Granjero who raised the roof with his charged Act II solo. Not only did his feet execute a whole scale of virtuosic beats — including a section with one leg tapping so fast that its contours blurred — he also pirouetted, jumped, kicked, flew across the stage, stabbed the air like a man possessed and imparted such a momentum to his own sweat that a stream twirled around him on several occasions.
By comparison, the group numbers were almost tame. Still, five or six pairs of feet can produce the kind of thunder one person can't, and there were effective sequences of unison footwork that collectively brought to mind the sound of an approaching train. Besides the two founders, the company included Denise Rios, Claudia Trevino, Monica Moncivais, Leeza Leche and Bianca Catano. Collapse
