Artpace San Antonio
Artpace is housed in an 18,000 square foot facility renovated by the eminent San Antonio firm Lake/Flato Architects. The 1920’s building, once a Hudson automobile dealership, is located in the vibrant downtown cultural district, one block from San Antonio’s famous River Walk. Through its International Artist-in-Residence program, Hudson (Show)Room exhibitions, WindowWorks projects, and ArtElements educational outreach, Artpace contributes to the city’s vital cultural life by providing access to contemporary art exhibitions and a diverse array of free programs for artists, students, and adults.

Artist Anya Gallaccio returns to Artpace sixteen years after her residency project, "they said there was a paradise way out west" debuted in 1997 as a part of the International Artist-in-Residence program. Known for her site-specific installations often incorporating organic material that references the physical nature of the site, Gallaccio will unveil a new work for Artpace composed of native Texas rock.

San Antonio-based artist Michael Menchaca’s colorful illustrations and videos draw inspiration from Pre-Colombian imagery and mythology to comment on socio-political issues surrounding the U.S.-Mexican border. For Artpace, Menchaca’s multi-dimensional Window Works installation pits El Diedad del Queso, a rat god, against Aquilas, an eagle deity.
Michael Menchaca will be on view in Artpace's Window Works gallery through September 1, 2013.
