Our Lady of the Lake University - International Folk Culture Center
The History of the International Folk Culture Center The international Folk Culture Center (IFCC), Inc. was created in 1995 to promote friendship, unity, and mental and physical fitness through music and dance. Having once been its own entity, housed but not supported through the University’s lifeline, a goal, through a sizeable donation, has been established: “My mission is to understand each other” (Dr. Janice Mendelson). “The University Direction outlines how OLLU develops the skills and qualities of leadership and service that prepares students to successfully participate in the opportunities of the Americas. It is especially important at this time when dual language and multi-culturalism has come of age. It opens up a bridge for all of the countries of the Americas through bi-cultural education” (Pres. Pollack). As part of Dr. Mendelson’s gift agreement, the University, Student Life Division, took under its wing of responsibility the IFCC. Organization The IFCC Director, Rachel Cruz, reports directly to the Vice-President of Student Life, Mr. Jack L. Hank. The director is advised by an advisory board of eight members. An administrative clerk and work study students provide support to the director and maintain hours of operation. Purpose of the International Folk Culture Center IFCC’s goal is to create partnerships with but not limited to: San Antonio Folk Dance Community, San Antonio Dance Umbrella, City of San Antonio’s Park and Recreation Department’s Cultural Arts Division, the Children’s Chorus of San Antonio, with other Our Lady of the lake University Divisions such as the College of Arts and Sciences to collaborate on the Calle 24 Series and with Campus Activities in the multicultural ventures. IFCC intends to host workshops and festivals for students of all ages in order to enrich their lives by providing cultural activities in which they can participate.
